Procedures: moving to upfront billing

From November 2026, procedure fees will be paid upfront, and each procedure will be quoted individually based on its item numbers.

Why we are making this change

Out of pocket costs are the most polarising part of medical care – and if you pay thousands of dollars each year for private health insurance, it is fair to ask why you should have further costs.

The gap is the difference between your doctor's fee and what Medicare and your health fund pay back combined. For decades, successive governments have indexed Medicare rebates well below inflation and wage growth. In real terms rebates have gone backwards, and insurers have cut what they pay too. The result is a wide disconnect between what Medicare pays and the real cost of providing care.

A doctor's fee must cover every cost of running the practice: clinical and administrative staff, rent, medical equipment and supplies, computer systems, electricity and professional indemnity insurance. None of this is funded separately - it all comes from the fee charged for each service.

We have increased our procedure fees in 13 years and have kept our known gap fixed at $500 - a figure set 26 years ago which has not changed since. Insurer payments lag well behind increasing clinic costs, and with recent Medicare, Workcover and TAC limiting of Item numbers, this is no longer sustainable. Moving to upfront billing is necessary for the practice to remain viable and keep providing safe, high-quality care.

What this means for you:

  • You will receive a written quote (informed financial consent) before your procedure, listing each item number.

  • Fees generally range from $800 to $5,000, depending on the procedure and any prostheses or devices used.

  • You pay the full fee upfront, then claim a portion back from Medicare and your private health insurer.

  • Our team can help you understand your quote and what you may be able to claim back.

We appreciate your understanding and remain committed to keeping care accessible. Please speak with our team if you have any questions about your quote.
